Back in 2014 a discovery of never before seen photographs of both Olympic and Titanic that were originally taken by John Kempster who worked for Harland and Wolff prompted extraordinary public enthusiasm, with various press stories and the public presentation of the album.
With such a huge new asset accessible it was unavoidable that distribution would before long follow. Created by the History Press, yet not in their already established Unseen series (being significantly unique in centre and format which is probably why the title is not like the rest of the books in the series), this book presents both the Kempster Album of as well as the Bell Album - an assortment of fundamentally shipboard photos taken by Officer Philip Bell of the White Star Line. Accompanying it are special captions of every photo and more extensive content utilizing contemporary news records and letters (among others) to put them into context for readers.
Due to the combining of both albums, the book is able to cover more than just the
Olympic Class liners. Chapters range from Olympic and Titanic to the following ships: Oceanic, Athenic, Medic and Majestic. However you will be able to find small section on both the Celtic and the Mauretania. Even though out of the 15 chapters included in the book that only leaves 7 left for focusing on the Olympic Class liners, there is still references made throughout the whole book.
If you just look at the text within the book which has been put together by Senan Molony, you will find paragraphs that go into great detail explaining each section of the book. For example some of the text comes straight from newspaper articles and even some letters by Officer Wilde. If you then turn just the photos which is the main focus of this book, you will find a collection of images from not only the albums (a key piece of information for all you Titanic photo lovers, it does not state exactly which album the photos come from) there is also a large amount of images that range from postcards of the time to even pictures of some advertisements.
Even though this book is more than just photos on Titanic, it still an excellent edition to any bookshelf.
